How Story Workout works

The setup

A workout is eighty questions about telling stories, in a different order every time you start fresh. The answer choices move around too, so the shape of the answers never gives it away.

Two tries

Tap the answer you think is right. If it is, you see why it works and you move on. If it is not, that choice is marked and you get one more try at the remaining answers.

After a second miss the best answer is shown with a short explanation, so no question is a dead end.

Points and badges

Every question you get right is worth one point, on the first or the second try. Badges arrive as your points add up, and each one shows up next to your points from then on.

Timed mode, if you want it

Timed mode is off unless you switch it on from the Story Workout box on the home page. With it on, each question gets its own clock, and a Stop the timer button is always there.

The clock starts at 60 seconds and speeds up as you earn badges: 57, 54, 51, 48, 45, 41, 37, 33, and 30 seconds after the last badge. It only changes when you actually earn a badge, so a run of misses never rushes you.

If the time runs out, nothing is lost. You get a gentle prompt to make your best guess and you can still answer.

Stopping and starting

Your place is kept on this device, so you can close the page and come back where you left off. Reset workout clears your workout points and badges and deals a newly shuffled set of questions. Nothing else in Story Gym changes.
